Well, it is farewell to Blogspot for me. I haven't posted recently because I got a message from them saying that I had reached my limit with photos. I just can't blog without adding photos: just think how boring my posts would be without them!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've spent two weeks looking around for a new blogging site, and I (we) finally settled on WordPress. My requirements were: easy to use, lots of photos allowed, and FREE! I don't want to have to pay to blog, especially since I don't earn a penny with my writing. As for easy to use: we will see. So far, I'm very frustrated with WordPress, but I will cut them some slack while I learn my way around. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I just wish this hadn't happened at this time of year (who has time to learn a new blog format in December?)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Come visit<a href="http://makeanddoblog.wordpress.com/"> my new, very rough blog</a> at WordPress.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last week, I had <a href="http://make--do.blogspot.com/2012/11/rustoleum-paint-and-primer-in-one.html">a newly-painted white lamp </a>and I didn't really like it. So I (no surprise) painted it again. I tried Rustoleum paint and primer in one again, this time in the metallic oil rubbed bronze. It's more bronze-y than the Krylon oil rubbed bronze that I've used so often, but I like it <i>a lot.</i> I think I might even like it better than the Krylon variety. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidatd1XWtZ6Bqhs6VHy8Me18MKdnwfrSd1J4_39y0eJLwJW76Slgd2Ir0lt49t2I7wL7ptcF1_W0vGXSoJiH6vuVcDzO-_Po24cDaPsu0JIM009aQhCUmhkcyBq11JdT7MTuKKv9ZoXtI/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidatd1XWtZ6Bqhs6VHy8Me18MKdnwfrSd1J4_39y0eJLwJW76Slgd2Ir0lt49t2I7wL7ptcF1_W0vGXSoJiH6vuVcDzO-_Po24cDaPsu0JIM009aQhCUmhkcyBq11JdT7MTuKKv9ZoXtI/s400/006.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now I have two matching lamps in the family room. I still need to replace the lampshades.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Other little projects I've been working on:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiELkUkwyI7V6Dh6xMf7j8L6Km80X1GSm8VHWuuSXp04k7ZlBhC8JHJQarZ22oDMysOTD_ltvE9od8ooqHTAoLxLrmisoCwSeKpFFprROoU0k02qwVXnk-D03qgk6zYVBY5FSSG-Mj8GD0/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiELkUkwyI7V6Dh6xMf7j8L6Km80X1GSm8VHWuuSXp04k7ZlBhC8JHJQarZ22oDMysOTD_ltvE9od8ooqHTAoLxLrmisoCwSeKpFFprROoU0k02qwVXnk-D03qgk6zYVBY5FSSG-Mj8GD0/s400/008.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
An <i>old </i>framed magnetic white board I purchased at a garage sale years ago, sprayed with chalkboard paint, and now a magnetic menu board! I stood it in a scrolly plate stand on the kitchen counter.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLtl1ktVap_-oNldMSvABr7rcPYzcbMcInhEGoVVcQpyLo8c0UzKJzHIWB57FoE2Xv435BdxEWlvrlzNggppV4gUSe91oZFjVhhTVKfVd64dh1s90U1giBAr0LmEfduXLlbxPXT-FjrP4/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLtl1ktVap_-oNldMSvABr7rcPYzcbMcInhEGoVVcQpyLo8c0UzKJzHIWB57FoE2Xv435BdxEWlvrlzNggppV4gUSe91oZFjVhhTVKfVd64dh1s90U1giBAr0LmEfduXLlbxPXT-FjrP4/s400/003.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Greta drew the Thanksgiving message on another chalkboard I painted recently. The frame has been empty for months; I asked the (wo)man in orange at Home Depot to cut a piece of masonite to fit my frame. I sanded it, primed it, and sprayed it with chalkboard paint. Greta volunteered to keep my messages seasonally updated. Isn't that nice of her?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The white-green-yellow pillow is also new. I found the fabric at Fabric and Fringe Warehouse and stitched it up to fit my favorite Ikea pillow insert. I like to rotate my sofa pillow covers and this one gives me more variety. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The woman's Christmas Brunch at church is coming up and I was asked to create centerpieces for the event. Pinterest wins again: I found cone trees and I thought they would be easy and inexpensive to make. Heather, Joyce, and I got together one day a couple of weeks ago and started brainstorming ideas.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started with a stack of lime green upholstery fabric scraps I had in my stash. I had no plans to use them for my home decor projects, so they could become trees. Shopping at Hob Lob, we decided on the color scheme of lime, turquoise, and bright pink. Each table will have three trees, one each of small, medium, and large. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was fun choosing coordinating fabrics and brainstorming trimming
ideas. They had to be inexpensive, but otherwise, any idea was a
possibility. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then we spent three long days cutting, gluing...</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been reading rave reviews by bloggers for the spray paint made by Rustoleum, called Universal Advanced Formula Satin Paint & Primer In One. Because I had several projects in mind, I bought a can of white at Home Depot today.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Project #1: change my three-decades-old antique brass table lamps from aging brass to...something. White? Black? Oil Rubbed Bronze? I couldn't decide, so I figured white could easily be painted over, and besides, I wanted white for another project. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgItLbnvirRi7WRGKxyk7fcQSa1vuN2riHuueQT-TO8fu5mC_z002Sgc4JXfuWvc1WE_SQNfEiO1RwnnyPJPpYJGMe0mEvvS75FWtrCSh6xhI4CWNlmCd8dUIMi9W82Ml0cYvrDLREGBtg/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgItLbnvirRi7WRGKxyk7fcQSa1vuN2riHuueQT-TO8fu5mC_z002Sgc4JXfuWvc1WE_SQNfEiO1RwnnyPJPpYJGMe0mEvvS75FWtrCSh6xhI4CWNlmCd8dUIMi9W82Ml0cYvrDLREGBtg/s400/001.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One old brass lamp. They were never that shiny brass, and they look even more aged now than they did way back when we bought them. Easy, easy spraying project: no primer, no sanding, just wrap up the electricals and spray away. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMYbVi7lcg9lqFzRYTmsfMUnJTE3XFkd22m5NlseKMypzxUkCVvnAYRjZPU156BopDEKFPJZB1Dagmn8hH39HP1hTxQzroWp888tL-jkwMj8vN48JnpBn14EJjJt1q48lOBXycqB6eDZI/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMYbVi7lcg9lqFzRYTmsfMUnJTE3XFkd22m5NlseKMypzxUkCVvnAYRjZPU156BopDEKFPJZB1Dagmn8hH39HP1hTxQzroWp888tL-jkwMj8vN48JnpBn14EJjJt1q48lOBXycqB6eDZI/s400/003.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One new white lamp. Well. I'm not so sure I like it white. I'm thinking oil rubbed bronze is more my style, and I think we need more contrast against the pale lemon walls. So I may go black (Rustoleum) or oil rubbed bronze (Krylon).<i> Please excuse the shade. </i><i><i>I'm very tired of these granny shades. </i>I want drum shades but I can't find white or light ones when I have the $$$. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn_xJaRQfCDhWsiWMQgswvMTiUhDlRhGegG9nbFfHiFtWBl_WEGn3wW0nWXxqdH21DyGewzXQcnlTh69JEQRdnV6a3WpuqTS4hhWXAWwvWrjsN039k2OVFn_7TkY03s81fshI6VeSV8TY/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn_xJaRQfCDhWsiWMQgswvMTiUhDlRhGegG9nbFfHiFtWBl_WEGn3wW0nWXxqdH21DyGewzXQcnlTh69JEQRdnV6a3WpuqTS4hhWXAWwvWrjsN039k2OVFn_7TkY03s81fshI6VeSV8TY/s400/007.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Project #2: Old cork bulletin board to new, refreshed <strike>bulletin board</strike> <i><span style="font-size: small;">Job-Tracking System</span></i> above the Professor's desk. We hope and expect the jobs will be visible now and therefore actually get done before two years go by. Sorry, I was so overly enthusiastic to begin painting the old cork that I forgot to take a "before" shot. As you can see, it's just a standard, Walmart variety, wood-framed cork board. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, how did I like the paint? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At first I wasn't impressed. I couldn't figure out how to make it spray (Duh. Slide the little red band UP and off the nozzle. Up arrows mean UP, not down.) Then it spit globules amongst the spray. But, miraculously, the globs all evened out and it looks smooth and perfect. After two projects, I can say that I really like-like-like this paint. I'm sad that it's nearly twice as much as my old Krylon from Walmart, but sometimes I will want to splurge on this paint with primer. </div>

The old Queen of Hearts antique mall on Canton highway closed a few months ago, and they just renovated and moved into a new space on Sandy Plains Road. They opened to the public today, and I was there before 10:00 this morning. I snapped a few shots of their new interior - it is very nice, an improvement over their old location. Most of the vendors seem to be taking greater care in their arrangements, using updated ideas and more eye-catching vignettes. </div>

Also near the front, I spied this glassless arched window up on a high ledge. I didn't see a price on it, and it is up too high to reach. It would be so cute over a mantel. <i>My</i> mantel. </div>

Love the paint on this table. Cream and light green, it looks like chalk paint, on an old farm table. It would certainly fit well in my house, but I do love my own dark-stained and white farm table. I didn't see a price tag on this table.</div>

So there is a brief glimpse of the new store. Stop in if you have a chance. I will definitely be back often, especially since I live so close (I could walk). </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Greta and I played around with another Pinterest idea: turning leaves into skeletons. No, I don't mean that they become the shape of a human skeleton. Instead, they lose the fleshy part of the leaf and all that remains is the skeleton <i>of the leaf</i>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was fun to try it out, but I'm not sure it is worth it to me to go to all the work it takes to skeleton-ize them. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Pinterest pin was only in Japanese and photos so we had no instructions to read. But here's what we guessed we were supposed to do: we put about one cup of washing soda (buy it in the laundry aisle) in a big pot, added a lot of water, and brought it to a boil. Then we tossed in leaves: dry, crisp ones; dry but not crisp ones; and even some green ones. We boiled and boiled them, two hours maybe?, until I decided that they would not come out of the pot with all the fleshy parts boiled away. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBDzh6TaP1_d33jnQlvH-3U8C0w1_s3II_K-ZmkKTVtzC8IUB5QmSvHwWDntBBeg2NVPcplRRJ_jHBaQaQ15OdiyycfTk9uFkCqG5A2CBDUsCavO8lsdVnMaZ0NnVePppugCkqkBNlL-M/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBDzh6TaP1_d33jnQlvH-3U8C0w1_s3II_K-ZmkKTVtzC8IUB5QmSvHwWDntBBeg2NVPcplRRJ_jHBaQaQ15OdiyycfTk9uFkCqG5A2CBDUsCavO8lsdVnMaZ0NnVePppugCkqkBNlL-M/s400/001.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By this time, the fresh green leaves had turned to mush - something like overcooked spinach. Well, that was a fail. Maybe they should have come out of the pot after 10 or 15 minutes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started taking leaves out one at a time, and laid them on a thick layer of paper towel. With an old toothbrush, I scrubbed on the backside of each leaf, up the center vein, and out each side vein. Eventually, I could see the fine veins appear. But it sure took a <i>lot</i> of scrubbing. And lots of holes appeared where, I assume, I scrubbed too hard.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I never got my leaves as "clean" as the Japanese photos showed, but maybe it was because I was using a different leaf variety. After they air-dried, I ironed the skeletons flat between sheets of waxed paper.<br />

This isn't a project that I plan to do again, unless someone can suggest a fabulous use for skeleton-ized leaves. </div>

<b>Greta</b> made a cute little banner by pounding fresh leaves onto muslin triangles. <br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
After cutting leaf shapes out of cardstock, they covered the bottom of a plastic container with shaving cream. Next they swirled in several layers of acrylic paint, and marbleized it with a skewer. They poked the leaves into the mess, pulled them up, and let them sit to soak in for a few minutes before using a squeegee to wipe off the excess paint and shaving cream. </div>

<b>Heather</b> didn't do a leaf project;
she worked on her project from last session. She is continuing work on
her stenciled canvas with old keys. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
She cut key shapes from paper and laid them on a bronzy painted canvas. Then she began spray painting over the whole thing. She has many more layers of blue spray paint to do before she peels off the paper keys to reveal her bronze keys under the blue paint. </div>

Yesterday was beautiful: warm but not hot, a slight breeze, and lots of sun. It was a perfect day for garage saling and Heather was as anxious as I was to go out. We made a huge circle through our part of town and found plenty of sales to keep us busy. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Heather scored some pricy Tupperware containers from a dealer, as well as some lovely vintage things.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuIq60fakuUsZhaa6UQrCIZ1otljMTLJDfkMx_U1bBHl3wm1tSCWdmjXKb-9zkmuqaCbxS0TmpxlzBwlygdV0aRDi-AH1AB1hWtbqgQzr4xd_2Q0ao9ndXcgoMhBHW_T3jfXuIr_0mMnk/s1600/clean+fan+filter.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuIq60fakuUsZhaa6UQrCIZ1otljMTLJDfkMx_U1bBHl3wm1tSCWdmjXKb-9zkmuqaCbxS0TmpxlzBwlygdV0aRDi-AH1AB1hWtbqgQzr4xd_2Q0ao9ndXcgoMhBHW_T3jfXuIr_0mMnk/s400/clean+fan+filter.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Pinterest is wonderful. Yesterday I found directions on de-greasing the vent filter the easy way. The instructions said:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fill your largest pot with water and bring it to a boil. Slowly stir in 1/2 cup baking soda. Do it slowly because it will bubble up for a moment with every addition of baking soda. Then stick your hood fan filter in the pot and let it sit. Turn it end over end, and let the other end sit for awhile. The boiling water literally boils the grease right out, and it comes out sparkling clean!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
See how murky the water is? That is all the grease boiling out of the filter. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After it was clean and the water drained off, I had to keep it propped up over the sink all night, but it was still damp in the morning. I clipped it back in place anyway, and it dried eventually. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
After great success with decoupaging foam <a href="http://make--do.blogspot.com/2012/09/girly-pumpkins-for-fall.html">pumpkins for church decorations</a>, I decided to make some for myself. I waited until Michael's had the carvable pumpkins at 50% off, and then I bought several in sizes that would fit on my mantle. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I looked for autumn-friendly quilter's prints at several stores until I found the colors I was looking for at Hancock Fabrics. No oranges and reds for me! I wanted to stick to the greens and yellows of my home decor, but I found only greens and browns. I decided that would work just fine. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpkJBGWbjDB34ejAD3EtMaR28TTTLAjPvZ5PJwnLZj4S7Y0vsQGcf4yzzNOTJcES2fuq7evW6v3groYPfCtyUx2I8wLTUTzPzGbMC0naVbO08SiFgV2w9zrYlmM_-sehy6UN8YU5TcU0Y/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpkJBGWbjDB34ejAD3EtMaR28TTTLAjPvZ5PJwnLZj4S7Y0vsQGcf4yzzNOTJcES2fuq7evW6v3groYPfCtyUx2I8wLTUTzPzGbMC0naVbO08SiFgV2w9zrYlmM_-sehy6UN8YU5TcU0Y/s400/002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The process was the same for these
pumpkins: a coat of primer (this time I used gesso), tearing the fabric
into strips and applying to the pumpkins using Mod Podge, and a final
coat of clear sealer. Easy, easy. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Just before I left for vacation I tried my hand at tiling for the first time. I remember years ago noticing that some Girl Scout troops got to do little tile projects, and I hoped my troop would do it too, but we never did.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was an easy beginner's project. I've had the tray for some years; I painted it white soon after I bought it. At Home Depot, I found a sheet of glass tile, 12"x12". It was slightly too big to fit in the bottom of the tray, but I eyeballed the fit, and it looked like if I cut off one row of tiles in each direction, the rest of the sheet would fit perfectly. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I bought the sheet of tiles and some grout, then I went home and googled what adhesive to use. In the end, I just used good ol' Elmer's. It made a good bond, and the sheet of tiles <i>did </i>fit perfectly after trimming. Spreading the grout was a no-brainer. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've thought up many uses for this tray all over my house. You will probably see it in many future photos!</div>

<br />
Two friends joined me this past week to make fancy pumpkins to decorate the entrance table at church.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_4ORyDJLBNVcAgt9_O6b-ozn443UALfOS2SywCn5vhnq7VL_jGePnlWck-UmZ02OIzbgbPH-8Uua7EZ_X06f7dgPOf1tTlk6nNqErS9TtiHcvGcRS7uTf4d6tVrjaMwcBnwbH2XG_-qQ/s1600/112.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_4ORyDJLBNVcAgt9_O6b-ozn443UALfOS2SywCn5vhnq7VL_jGePnlWck-UmZ02OIzbgbPH-8Uua7EZ_X06f7dgPOf1tTlk6nNqErS9TtiHcvGcRS7uTf4d6tVrjaMwcBnwbH2XG_-qQ/s400/112.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since repainting the church interior a soft gray, our old seasonal decorations just don't look very nice, especially the bronzes and oranges we used to use for fall. We needed something that would stand out against the walls, and at the same time bring in the gray.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGgL31yYlMJEuZbQYrophK6X-dVEokcw5fjYkQRPtn78nWX8vvJdreJM30SDXwCbbL6gc4xdEv4D8xeH5puJEIKnoalt3F4P7amPZFVhh-XKbq3-4snjRBU31qrmgsDIV5xnBE4IXzYTM/s1600/114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGgL31yYlMJEuZbQYrophK6X-dVEokcw5fjYkQRPtn78nWX8vvJdreJM30SDXwCbbL6gc4xdEv4D8xeH5puJEIKnoalt3F4P7amPZFVhh-XKbq3-4snjRBU31qrmgsDIV5xnBE4IXzYTM/s400/114.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Off to Hob Lob we went. We chose several coordinating print fabrics, and
then we tore those into fairly wide strips. By brushing Mod Podge
directly on the pumpkins, and then burnishing down the fabric strips, we
covered the surfaces quickly. A final slap of Mod Podge all around, a
little touch of acrylic paint on the bare stems, and there we are.</div>

We have had these U.G.L.Y two-tone oak and white laminate cabinets all over our home for 20 years now, and they have greatly overstayed their
welcome. I would love to replace them, but the budget says no. So I decided to try priming and painting the single cabinet in the hall bathroom. (I have to post a "before" photo of the master bath cabinets because I was so enthusiastic to get started that I forgot to take a picture of the hall bathroom cabinets. They were identical, except for length.) </div>

Notice the gap in the corner between the wall and both pieces of molding? I haven't solved that problem yet. That gap is from a wide strip of hideous plastic molding that had absolutely no use there. Yes, I said <i>plastic.</i> I don't understand why they used plastic when basic wood molding is so inexpensive. Maybe it was to give me fits 20 years later. </div>

I still need to do the touch-up painting on the walls, and I may need to give one more coat of paint to the doors. Later on, I <i>may</i> do the
whole kitchen now that I've had success with the bathroom. And there's the master bath cabinetry to update too. Sounds like I have many months' worth of work on my horizon!</div>

We had a light turnout this afternoon for our craft day: just Heather and me. Even so, we had fun. We went ahead with the scheduled craft, enameled number tags. All of us, even those who couldn't attend today, searched high and low for blank metal dog tags, with a hole near the top. We never found them, so I thought the craft was a washout, but Heather had other ideas. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
She suggested we use an aluminum soft drink can, cut it open with scissors, and then punch out discs with my circle punch. A standard hole puncher made the holes near the top edge, and white spray paint covered the printing on the can. Then we planned to stamp numbers or letters on the front with black stamp ink, but I had none. Our limited choice in my craft drawer was deep red ink or black acrylic craft paint. We chose the black paint, dabbing it on the little number stamps, and then stamping that on the dog tags. Mostly, it worked well. My one big ooze wiped right off so I got a second try on that tag. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We covered the bottom of my electric skillet with parchment paper and heated the skillet to 350*. Then we sprinkled clear embossing powder over the surface of the dog tags, one at a time. Carefully, we lifted the powdered tag onto the parchment paper and then watched the embossing powder suddenly melt across the tag's surface. It's magical!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

In the bubble glass jar are old Christmas ornaments with the coloring
removed. I soaked them in bleach for several days and then shook and
rinsed them to get most of the color out. I scrubbed the stubborn spots
with Q-tips. To color them the soft, seaside colors, I used Vitrea glass
stain sloshed around inside to make the deeper tones, and Mod Podge
mixed with food coloring brushed on the outside to make the frosted
ones. </div>

Yesterday this sweet group of ladies joined me at my home for our bi-monthly craft day. This was our "butterfly" project from Pinterest. Almost everyone chose to work on a canvas, first applying a base of paint or paper, and then creating a collage of butterflies (most of us). Some decorated their butterflies with layers of trims and some left their butterflies plain. Some built up more layers on the canvas with paint or ink before adding their butterflies. Some aren't quite finished with their canvas yet!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a very fun project and a very fun afternoon with eight of us around the table. We had to add a leaf to the table to make more crafting space this week !</div>

Friday was my weekly garage saling date with Heather. We didn't find a lot this week, probably because we didn't find a lot of garage sales. I guess it's too hot for most people now. Here are the lovlies I found:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhss0MVl5JimUiA-y0XPo9SYZe6FgDrTV11mMtsT9nmX13ORWqNdEuKlCKbyWtyd5MTFQ8yrx5CALoe_XynIb-I975jVKoJxwaR2VTsnAtWGn9yQsPrk0ZGzCkJMtIYa7IHiKAl6MvbsR8/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhss0MVl5JimUiA-y0XPo9SYZe6FgDrTV11mMtsT9nmX13ORWqNdEuKlCKbyWtyd5MTFQ8yrx5CALoe_XynIb-I975jVKoJxwaR2VTsnAtWGn9yQsPrk0ZGzCkJMtIYa7IHiKAl6MvbsR8/s400/001.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
At one garage sale I found: <br />
2 rotary cutters with a bunch of spare blades, $5<br />
A beautiful hand crocheted throw, $7<br />
<br />
At an estate sale I found:<br />
A round antique linen tablecloth with a wide lace border, $8<br />
<br />
That was it for this week.Adiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11366092592887481823noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2676632964953342282.post-4908986898488076272012-07-20T17:46:00.004-04:002012-10-19T17:32:38.205-04:00New-Again Table<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Before</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our old kitchen table from last century was really begging for an
update. A blonde top and dark green legs are really not the thing to be
wearing these days, that's for sure. Now that all the kids have escaped
to their own homes, I decided the time was ripe for a re-do. <br />
<br />
I grabbed the palm sander and went to work in the kitchen. Some minutes later I realized that was a big "oops!" I had laid a fine layer of sanding dust all over everything in the entire kitchen and family room. I even found a dusting on the windows! So, after the massive clean-up, I had The Professor help me drag the table to the patio, where I could sand to my heart's content. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The top down to bare wood, the next step was the fun part. At least I think it's fun. I love to stain bare wood and watch it turn a deep brown as it brings out the beauty and various tones of the wood. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some time elapsed while I took a week to get ready for our garage sale, and then get our home back to normal after the sale. Finally I found a free day yesterday to prime and paint the legs and apron on the table. I had The Professor help me flip it upside down on the kitchen floor and I got to work with a brush. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Three coats of primer...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Two layers of white paint...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>After</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Turned right side up again, and LOVELY!<br />

A few days later I spent all my garage sale earnings on a few white Ikea chairs. We can't sit on mismatched chairs now, can we? We really like these chairs with the padded seats. Some day I will recover the pads with a fabric that coordinates better with my kitchen and family room colors, but for now it works for me. <br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the midst of preparing for another garage sale I took some time out to host another craft day on Thursday. This time we tried staining glass items using Pebeo Vitrea glass stain that we bought at Michael's. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi93CSUXQOKeI-s9Bzf0EY3VlAMhONqlnSC0a5V8tbe5m-La1WLMTjCTHi8oIQH-gPUkxcPwHEJ9o9a4slZWzgEAPd3GLH3Mgb5DCd05PRXP9RNjJQP4v1OMDollbJCxL5xfW-SnZorj7A/s1600/013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi93CSUXQOKeI-s9Bzf0EY3VlAMhONqlnSC0a5V8tbe5m-La1WLMTjCTHi8oIQH-gPUkxcPwHEJ9o9a4slZWzgEAPd3GLH3Mgb5DCd05PRXP9RNjJQP4v1OMDollbJCxL5xfW-SnZorj7A/s400/013.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Most of them turned out well, although some of the glass pieces seemed to sort of resist the stain and the color ran a little. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We didn't particularly care for all the colors, such as the reds. I especially like the deep turquoise items. Some of the stains came out frosted and some clear, but we don't know why.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizoQx8RLIB5-_cu-ZIHs5_QiTbiqeiT6BZPSTBtZusmXLRgB1Pccb-ZfasMk307QZBNxRxxAikV5ciBH-7InWRjwhUc_CMy2nOITes8C7NYGrpTrE-9w8-6q2OW5IXS4Ww7lOHf8B2I-k/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizoQx8RLIB5-_cu-ZIHs5_QiTbiqeiT6BZPSTBtZusmXLRgB1Pccb-ZfasMk307QZBNxRxxAikV5ciBH-7InWRjwhUc_CMy2nOITes8C7NYGrpTrE-9w8-6q2OW5IXS4Ww7lOHf8B2I-k/s320/015.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We dyed jars, candlesticks, clear glass balls, and vases.We also tried mixing Mod Podge with food coloring - it turned out well too. It comes out looking frosted. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I made Fourth of July Sparklers for a treat at the symphony orchestra outdoor concert tonight. Easy, easy treat to make. You will need:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A 10-oz bag of pretzel rods (I used Snyder's of Hanover)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A tub of white icing </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3 bottles of patriotic sprinkles (1.75 oz)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cover a rimmed baking sheet with waxed paper or parchment paper. Break the pretzel rods in half, if desired. Empty a bottle of sprinkles onto a plate. Open the icing tub, remove the seal, and nuke icing about 15-20 seconds. Stir well. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Dip the broken end of each pretzel in the tub down to the bottom, remove, and allow to drip back in the container. Roll the icing portion in the sprinkles. Place on the waxed paper. Repeat with remaining pretzel halves. When complete, chill in the refrigerator an hour or so. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMwg91eQnLpB13C19YQ0sf4zzf5ETc18azdZSBadSfjDQtUXuXh9PPE25qp0B_XYItBQIzxB32dqLFwuJ6Q2BFU0WRCp7ChOAcUKs0Z8oFtF08ajN0QyNIIrZ6smhWk9q8mRbhj3WiRD13/s1600/027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMwg91eQnLpB13C19YQ0sf4zzf5ETc18azdZSBadSfjDQtUXuXh9PPE25qp0B_XYItBQIzxB32dqLFwuJ6Q2BFU0WRCp7ChOAcUKs0Z8oFtF08ajN0QyNIIrZ6smhWk9q8mRbhj3WiRD13/s400/027.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can do all the little broken pieces in the bag too. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can keep the pretzels whole if you want, but they don't have the same sweet/salty balance. We liked them better broken in half. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I got some great grocery deals today, combining sales or BOGO and coupons. This is what I snagged:</div>
Mueller's pasta, BOGO and 55c/2 coupons: 52c each box<br />
Dial soap pumps, $1 each and 35c coupons doubled: 30c each <br />
Chinet plates 72 ct, BOGO: $3.20<br />
Kraft shredded cheese, $2 each and 55c coupons: $1.45 each pkg<br />
Reynolds Wrap non stick foil: $2.99 and 75c coupon: $2.24<br />
Al Fresco sausages, $5.49 (regular price), $1/2 store Q and $1 mfr Qs: $3.99 each<br />
Coleslaw BOGO: 65C<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Chinet plates are for our three away-from-home picnics this weekend; the cheese is for the freezer; the pasta is for hot-day salads; and I'm glad to finally get a good deal on non-stick foil. I've been wanting to try it. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This afternoon five ladies met around my dining room table to make sheet music candles. We thought this was a really fun idea on Pinterest.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A few days ago I raided our decorations closet at church for a dozen or so white and cream pillar candles that have seen better days. I already knew fresh candles were in the new budget, so I felt confident that walking off with the old, wonky ones wouldn't hurt anyone's feelings. But just to be sure, I passed it by our Worship Leader; he gave me the thumbs up. I also found, deep in a dusty closet, an old, outdated hymnal from two decades ago. We no longer use this edition, so I knew nobody would miss it either. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO0jPebB9sXL_QfbfS9D7KmU-K8aUpyh225bEYScm8mGFxUfZPghQtOKDMtPHtonC_TeMYgADE8FCf55WX0LXCBNv7xxIrasAy1Ehext1NAYAbzaPfa7-JFR5HbqVFU-DYKWiGh9eWCCFn/s1600/(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO0jPebB9sXL_QfbfS9D7KmU-K8aUpyh225bEYScm8mGFxUfZPghQtOKDMtPHtonC_TeMYgADE8FCf55WX0LXCBNv7xxIrasAy1Ehext1NAYAbzaPfa7-JFR5HbqVFU-DYKWiGh9eWCCFn/s400/(1).JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At my dining table today, we first tore pages from the hymnal. We ripped the pages down to the size to fit the height of the candle, and then we tightly wrapped a page around the candle and pinned in place. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Q6IB_9kuAVZjdqEmitfGQvZ5YuoKrnuf_LFzeRy9PewF6o5O7MddB7FvaVzfzNqawgsmGbP0Y3rtx-eiMk_1-28H58rQRn43Q5YBd6sT977a3Ljet-FJiXh4BwGftzFIcBgR0QKWim1y/s1600/(11).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Q6IB_9kuAVZjdqEmitfGQvZ5YuoKrnuf_LFzeRy9PewF6o5O7MddB7FvaVzfzNqawgsmGbP0Y3rtx-eiMk_1-28H58rQRn43Q5YBd6sT977a3Ljet-FJiXh4BwGftzFIcBgR0QKWim1y/s400/(11).JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Using a heat gun (best) or blow dryer (ok), we heated the candle until the wax started to melt and bleed through the paper, working all the way around the candle. That bonded the paper to the candle. We found it best to immediately roll any paper edges on the table to fully bond. Those edges like to pop up. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkczlotpKDCEXiUZ5Wx99avKu_63N7N6qOIf4Mkco1zwEkno_PIn2lnvx4V7PCmUJyRnfl_qDJpzkV8K-s3NLyMGlC2aVLSkxO9BBP3bGHGkztMJtZIybohE6_7xHTRR8Pxkr2S2lu7vWf/s1600/(13).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkczlotpKDCEXiUZ5Wx99avKu_63N7N6qOIf4Mkco1zwEkno_PIn2lnvx4V7PCmUJyRnfl_qDJpzkV8K-s3NLyMGlC2aVLSkxO9BBP3bGHGkztMJtZIybohE6_7xHTRR8Pxkr2S2lu7vWf/s400/(13).JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After making some candles with music we decided to branch out and try different papers. We already knew that scrapbooking papers would be too thick, so we tried another Pinterest technique: color copy onto a piece of tissue paper or tracing paper. How did we do that? First cut the thin paper <i>longer</i> than a standard piece of copy paper, and barely <i>narrower</i> than the copy paper. For example, cut the tissue or tracing paper about 8" wide, and 13" or 14" long. Stack the thin paper with the copy paper, then wrap the excess of the thin paper to the back of the copy paper and tape it in place. Run it through the copier as usual. (Make sure you select "color"!) Untape it and there you have thin, pretty paper to melt to your candle. And that's it!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDCrWNVxk6j4ogz7TUhtEKUibfr4wazijGrd6tsEVcoeYAo3ixQ442m0ZqNNrsRiXpxZmZwPqxkeQPxmi8e1MsO_TeIjnrXXTEcBLXjF2DDl_CbuOQhzGfr-VzzQMqd_LBmOdN-CWDXQVT/s1600/(12).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDCrWNVxk6j4ogz7TUhtEKUibfr4wazijGrd6tsEVcoeYAo3ixQ442m0ZqNNrsRiXpxZmZwPqxkeQPxmi8e1MsO_TeIjnrXXTEcBLXjF2DDl_CbuOQhzGfr-VzzQMqd_LBmOdN-CWDXQVT/s400/(12).JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
The wax may run down the candle; that's fine. You can roll the candle on your work surface whenever you want. The drips will embed into the candle and the edges will adhere better. See the pushpins on the candle? They hold the paper in place until it's well melted. <br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've gone a full year without artwork on the dining room walls, ever since I painted the room last May. See the corner of the dresser and the big, bare wall beyond the dining table, above.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I needed inspiration and a BIG mirror. Well, I got the big mirror last month. Heather had it stored in the attic and then she decided she would never hang it above her boys' dresser. Never. Not with Thomas the Tank engines and books and Brix Blocks flying through the air on a regular basis. So she gave it to me and I knew it would be perfect above my dining room
"china cabinet", which is really just a dresser. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
When Greta stopped by this morning, I snagged her help. That mirror is
HEAVY! We weighed it just to be sure we bought hardware that would hold
the weight. It weighs 33 pounds. After a run to three stores, we had
hardware in hand and we got that thing up on the wall. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPZFMkvPICx6MQri6Tz-7iTmEn3Ix2oiTCCflY6DUlexomrlE9YNenTU_Q65EwVJu2ScY3Wr-iiHlMVxv5f79N6UJEcqDvWQgDkmxpLtjceBza4SKGjDr3EnwO5y9V3skEQnk9KGOP1Ppj/s1600/Hanging+pictures+%282%29.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPZFMkvPICx6MQri6Tz-7iTmEn3Ix2oiTCCflY6DUlexomrlE9YNenTU_Q65EwVJu2ScY3Wr-iiHlMVxv5f79N6UJEcqDvWQgDkmxpLtjceBza4SKGjDr3EnwO5y9V3skEQnk9KGOP1Ppj/s400/Hanging+pictures+%282%29.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next I wanted to add some artwork on each side of the mirror to fill out that big, blank
wall and begin to balance the 12 feet of tall bookcases on the opposite
wall. Greta helped me with that too...</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In my last post, I had cleaned out and repainted the closet in the kitchen. Over the next few days, I gathered up all my china, glassware, serving pieces, baskets, and all the other food-related items I use when entertaining. They have been scattered all over the house, from bedroom closet to laundry room to dining room and garage. I slowly worked my way up from the floor, filling the shelves with it all. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I purged (again) as I worked. Wow. I sure have a LOT of stuff. Some pieces I've held onto for decades, even though I haven't used it in decades. I guess I thought I "shouldn't" pass it on if someone gave it to us for a wedding gift. So silly. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have officially renamed this closet the China Closet. Many historic homes have a china closet instead of a china cabinet or hutch, so I feel I'm in good company. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Going from top down and left to right on each shelf, I have: (shelf 1) glass beverage dispensers and large apothecaries; (shelf 2) inherited family china and vintage glass dessert sets; (shelf 3) china teapots and small pitchers; (shelf 4) our wedding china; (shelf 5) china Christmas plates, china plates for decorative uses, and china plates collected from our travels; (shelf 6) goblets; (floor) tall vases and baskets in open bins.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the very top shelf which doesn't show in this photo I have a green depressionware berry set and smaller glass apothecaries.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I love that I can simply open the doors and take out whatever I need.</div>
